BRIEF HISTORY

Rooted in Mississippi since 1966

FCM was created in October 1966 to plan and coordinate support for more than 60 volunteer centers — an effort to reverse the Office of Economic Opportunity’s decision to stop funding the Child Development Group of Mississippi (CDGM). When CDGM received renewed funding, it was limited to 14 counties. Six excluded counties operated without federal or state funding for 18 months until becoming a delegate agency with Tougaloo College in late 1967. FCM received an incorporation charter from the State of Mississippi in 1968.
